About Us

NATO of New Jersey is a not-for-profit trade organization that consists of New Jersey motion picture theatre owners, operators, executives and managers. The organization's purpose is to provide New Jersey movie theatre personnel with vocational advice, professional guidance and to further promote the prosperity and welfare of New Jersey's movie theatres. Additionally, NATO of NJ is a sustaining contributor to industry sponsored humanitarian endeavors including The Will Rogers Foundation and Variety The Children’s Charity.

NATO of New Jersey was formed in 1981 as a unified association advancing objectives of motion picture exhibitors in the state. Its founding membership was comprised of participants in predecessor organizations including the original iteration of the National Association of Theater Owners (originally a New York City based organization) as well as NITE (National Independent Theater Exhibitors) and the Allied States Association of Motion Picture Exhibitors.

Throughout its history, NATO of New Jersey has taken a leadership role in advancing interests of the industry by providing a unified voice for dealing with public policy and legislative matters. In 1984, the organization sponsored its first local trade conference which eventually developed into ShoEast, one of two dominant industry trade shows that continue to garner national attention and participation. Seeking to assist its membership in attracting the next generation of owners, operators and managers, NATO of New Jersey was among the first of NATO’s regional affiliates to offer financial support to its many student-employees and children of employees interested in further education.
